First edition, second impression of book originally published in 1988. Octavo, pp x, [2], 619. Bound in red paper covered hard boards, gilt to spine and in the original dust jacket. Illustrated with b/w photo plates and end-paper maps, this is an extensive and deeply researched record of the lives and work of British consular officers working in China. The author was himself a consular officer in China as a young man and thus writes from first hand experience as well as much research. Interesting subject, excellently written. Near Fine condition book in a Fine and bright jacket. Surprisingly hard to find book.
