Pamphlet, soft covers, pp 26 + 21, 19cm x 13cm. Undated, probably published in 1880's, with the latest date noted in the section on decrees, laws and regulations being 1881.

The booklet is arranged in two parts, the first being 26 pages which details the structure, rules and regulations of the profession: of the 'Jigoku' or unlicenced women, of the 'Shogi' or licenced prostitutes and of the 'Geisha' or professional singers and dancers. The second part, 21 pages, extracts from previously published works on the subject including Mitford's 'Tales of Old Japan' and Henry Norman's 'The Real Japan - The Yoshiwara: An Unwritten Chapter of Japanese Life'.

In Very Good condition, paper browned, binding tight, covers undamaged.

A most uncommon source.
