Australian born Selwyn Francis Edge was an early motoring and motor-racing participant, joining the London to Brighton Runs in 1895 and 1896, racing at Brooklands from the outset and 1907 he christened the new circuit with its first 24 hours endurance record at an average speed of 65mph in a Napier, a record which was to stand for 18 years.
