Mak Fung

Born in Hong Kong in 1918, Mak Fung’s photographic activities began in the late 1940’s with a small darkroom at home, later lecturing on photography and taking up editorial roles in various photography publications, including the running of Photo Pictorial, Hong Kong’s longest and most important photography magazine.  Mak Fung passed away in 2009.

Mak Fung played an important role in photographing and documenting the Hong Kong cityscape throughout the second half of the 20th century. He recorded areas often overlooked by others working at the same time, including Tai O, Aberdeen and Stanley. His interest was in capturing the human emotions and cultural spirit of his subjects.
