Bound in publishers brown cloth covered hard boards, gilt title and decoration to spine and blind stamped decoration to the boards. The maps are based on sketches by the author, being folding maps of Ningpo and Shanghai and a single page map of Canton bound in, and a large folding map titled “Inland Trip from Ningpo to Canton ” in the pocket at the rear of the book. In the preface Milne describes these maps as “the most accurate hitherto published”. Milne lived and travelled in China from 1839 until 1854 as a missionary working under the auspices of the London Missionary Society. He travelled widely through the country and lived for extended periods in Ningpo and Shanghai , the latter in its early days of settlement. The book contains an extended chapter on Shanghai as well as brief descriptions of Hong Kong , Macao and Canton . In Very Good condition, slight tanning and dulling of the gilt on the spine, binding tight, no foxing or spotting, short tear to the rear pocket without loss. An uncommon work, especially desirable for the content and map of Shanghai .
