See Hongkong - The Riviera of the Orient (circa 1935)
S. D. Panaiotaky
Poster issued by the Hong Kong Travel Association which enourages vistitors to come to Hong Kong so they can ride a sedan chair to The Peak for the wonderful views. Sedan chairs were a popular mode of transport in 19th and early 20th century Hong Kong and many wealthy Peak residents retained a team of coolies to carry them up the steep hills. By the time this poster was issued in the mid-1930's, licensed sedan chair numbers were declining as motorised transport became more popular.
This poster is overprinted with "Travel A O Line S.S. Changte & S.S. Taiping".
A-O Line was the Australia Oriental Line, a shipping company that operated between Sydney, Hong Kong and Japan from its formation in 1912 until operations ceased in 1961. Taiping and Changte were two of its ships. This poster, printed and issued in Hong Kong by HKTA would have been shared with AO Line to help promote its route into Hong Kong.
A very rare poster, even more so for the overprinting. Although the poster has restoration in the blue bottom border and among the orange lettering at the top, the main artwork of the poster is in Very Good condition.
