Early in the winter season, pine trees are stuck in the ice to serve as route markers during the frequent snow storms. As Paley explains “I crossed Lake Baikal with a group of Old Believers, women all in their 70’s who sang incredibly beautiful and melancholic traditional songs. We drove from tree to tree, making our way safely through this ice world, while the women sang in unison.â€
