Collection of Ephemera related to Opium Trade (1854-1869)
1854-1869
B12533
A collection of letters, bills of lading and a receipt dating from 1854 to 1869 concerning the opium trade from
India to Hong Kong and
China. An interesting highlight in the collection is a letter concerning a trade dispute between a merchant in Macau and his opium buyer in
Calcutta. There is also a receipt from Jardine Matheson & Co. for the purchase of ten chests of opium. Other companies mentioned include Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, E.D. Sassoon & Co. and P. & D.N. Camajee Co., the latter two were trading with offices in
Hong Kong.
A rare and valuable set of correspondence on the opium trade in the region.
