Handsomely bound in contemporary dark brown leather. Tight binding. Five raised bands, all edges gilt, ornamented with gilt tooling on front and back boards and spines. With steel engraved plates by Thomas Allom. Includes 128 steel engravings by Thomas Allom after Chinese drawings from Staunton’s collection, by Captain Stoddart, and others, and descriptive text accompanying all the plates written by Rev George Wright. Largely dealing with Peking, Nanking, the south-east and the south of China, including four plates of Hong Kong and a further four of Macao. Overall a clean and firm set, with moderate foxing to some pages (though far less than normally found). [Lust 363. Cordier 80-81]
