Peking Studies (1934)

Ellen Catleen [Thorbecke]

Shanghai: Kelly & Walsh
First Edition
1934
Very Good
B16514

By Ellen Catleen [Thorbecke] with illustrations by F. Schiff.

In publisher’s cream cloth boards with a black and white photograph pasted down. Some spotting and general wear to boards, rubbed to corners and the head of spine starting. Presents nicely, insides immaculate. Very Good.

Profusely illustrated with photogravures by the author, originally taken with a Rolleiflex camera. Decorated with sketches by F. Schiff. Thorbecke, née Ellen Catleen, German photojournalist and wife of Dutch ambassador, W.J.R. Thorbecke, worked in China during the 1930’s. Friedrich Schiff (1908-1968), Austrian caricaturist, moved to Shanghai in 1929 and is renowned for his amusing sketches of life in China. Written in the style of a comic, this book narrates the story of Mr Pim exploring Beijing with Mr Wu, his guide. Scarce.
