Rain is a clarion call for Furniss, the unifying eau behind his new series of photographs. Conceived of eight years ago, the images have been executed exclusively in Hong Kong over the past several years and draw upon Furniss’ deep knowledge and understanding of the environment in which he is working. Every image brings together the energy of the city with one of Hong Kong’s annual rites – the Rain.
Furniss’ work is of colour and light. Rain itself is colourless, but as it bends and refracts the light, the water reshapes taxis, neon signs, people and architecture — all of which Furniss exploits to his advantage. In his quest he has used the Hongkong Tramway as his camera dolly, for shelter, a familiar angle, that jilted-rolling motion, and a unique vantage point. The Tram, which runs through the very heart of Hong Kong, provides Furniss the perfect protected environment in a grand deluge—it’s tracks are the spinal cord of the city.
