FIRST EDITION, bound in contemporary half tan leather with marbled boards. Five raised bands, brown title piece, gilt lettering and gilt ruling to spine. A major account of Lord Amherst's Embassy to China with H.M.S. Alceste in 1816. Narrated by Sir Henry Ellis, third commissioner of the Embassy. Illustrated with a frontispiece of Lord Amherst's portrait, 7 aquatint plates, and three steel-engraved maps (one folding). Plates are all clean and elegantly coloured, engraved from watercolours by Charles Abbot, M. Brownrigg. [Lush 509; Cordier 2393] Scattered foxing to text, but as usual, the maps are considerably foxed.
