Pawn Shop Signs (2015)

William Furniss

Limited edition of 50
Archival Pigment Print
26.7 x 40 cm
Hong Kong
2015
WF309

This photograph is a survey of different styles of Hong Kong pawn shop neon signs. It was created in camera using a multi-exposure technique and after extensive pre-planning. The whole image was shot on a single evening over a 2.5 hour period and required the photographer to visit several traditional districts in Hong Kong and Kowloon including Wanchai, Mongkok and Yau Ma Tei.

All seven signs are typical of the colour and design variants found among the 250 pawn shops in Hong Kong. The sign design depicts a bat with outstretched wings atop a coin. The bat symbolises good fortune and the coin is a symbol of benefit.

This photograph will be best framed and presented without a card window mount. A narrow black frame and spacer (to separate the image from the glazing) are recommended.
